Community Ministries
Ministry Activities Ministry Description Current Needs
Augsburg Central Nursing Center A health service center administered and staffed by nurses from Augsburg College Nursing Program. Provides health assessment and education, counseling and health advocacy. Donations of supplies such as large disposable diapers, men’s white athletic tube socks, deodorant and other personal hygiene items. If there are any nurses who would consider volunteering in the center, we would like to meet with them.
Global Missions Keeps spiritual and physical needs of the global community in the mind of the congregation. Helps channel resources to the needs of the world. Participation in weekly educational forums.
Clothes Closet Facilitates the running of the Clothes Closet, prepares and serves Monday morning meal and offers referrals, worship and support for homeless and low income people in our community. We need individuals to work with the meal or the “Closet” on:
Mondays, from 7:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. or some portion of that time. Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. or some portion of that time. (During June, July and August there is no Thursday Closet)
We always welcome donations of clothes, household goods, hygiene products.
Peace with Justice Provides educational opportunities relating to peace and justice issues for Central members and guests. At this time, we are recruiting new members by public invitation to our meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month. During that time, we also discuss peace with justice issues.
Reading Partners Read with children enrolled in Wonderous Wednesdays and Kid Central programs. Substitutes willing to read to and with individual children on Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. during the school year.
Seminary Relations Coordinates financial support and mentoring for Central seminarians and oversees internship and contextual education programs. Pastors to serve as mentors. Scholarship financial support.
Youth Meets monthly to plan, advocate and provide for Youth Ministry at Central. Adult volunteers who are “positive, personal and persistent.”
Operations

Receptionist Answers telephone, routes calls and responds to inquiries. Friendly people needed for 4-hour (more or less) shift per week, weekdays and Sunday mornings. Times and commitment very flexible.
Spiritual Growth and Discipleship
Ministry Activities Ministry Description Current Needs
Children & Family Engages the congregation in educating, serving and advocating for all children and families in ways unique to Central's context. Members willing to meet once a month to work on communication, coordination, advocacy and recruiting.
Cradle Roll Mailing to families beginning after baptism until age 3 years when they will be Sunday School. Three individuals work approximately two hours once a month. Substitutes are needed to learn process.
Central Friends Contacts shut-ins by telephone and in-person visits. We can always use more persons of all ages who are willing to visit or make phone calls once or twice a month.
Gifts Coordination Advocates for, and helps implement, gifts-based team ministry at Central. Persons with a passion for gifts discovery who would like to help with development and implementation of gifts-based ministry at Central.
Library Provide and maintain reference and lending library resources for all Central Lutheran Church members and staff. Additional ministry team members to provide library planning, management, publicity and maintenance direction and support. Also, an additional core of at least four volunteers to provide operation and loaner record-keeping support in the two facilities during open hours. Experience useful but not necessary.
Life Long Learning Coordinates and plans educational events for Central’s congregation and the surrounding community. Individuals interested in planning and hosting educational offerings for Central’s congregation and the surrounding community.
Milestones Engages the congregation in educating, serving and advocating for all children and families, in ways unique to Central’s context, so as to strengthen the spiritual life of the congregation and to contribute to the church’s evolving capacity to respond to God’s call. Team members and related ministries volunteers.
New Members Offers hospitality to new members; coordinates new member class and reception. We need members of Central who are interested in serving as sponsors to new members. We always need additional team members with a passion to provide hospitality to new members at the classes and reception held three times per year. The team meets monthly.
Pew Bags Prepares and repairs cloth bags holding materials for children in the sanctuary. People to replenish supplies in the bags for Sunday morning. People to sew new bags.
Prayer Chain Responds to all prayer requests through organized group effort. To expand the prayer chain membership to include more men and young people as well as women.
Prayer Ministries Our mission is to explore, foster and support prayer in all of its forms in the hearts and lives of the congregation. The ministry team invites members who have a special interest in prayer and spiritual growth to join us in our task of coordinating existing prayer endeavors and initiating new prayer ventures.
Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors (OWLS) Schedules outings, educational services and fellowship opportunities for Seniors. Volunteers to help with events.
Sunday School Provides a loving and interesting environment on Sunday mornings in which children (3 yrs. old thru grade 6) learn Bible stories to nurture individual and group faith formation. We need individuals who are willing to share their talents (music-science-art) with children on Sundays from 10–11:00 a.m. as needed. (Depending on content of lesson) This is a one-time or short-term commitment. Teachers/Resource people for Fall 2004.
GLBT Ministry Team The Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Ministry Team works toward shaping a congregation that moves beyond mere “tolerance” of diversity in order to be a congregation that is excited, active and effective about cherishing and celebrating our differences. New members. Lunch and Learn Series assistance. Planners, hosts, greeters and event coordinators are needed. The team meets once a month on a weeknight.

Heritage Ministry Team Collects, stores and preserves historical artifacts. Historical artifacts.
Worship, Music, the Arts and Hospitality
Ministry Activities Ministry Description Current Needs
Altar Guild Maintains the quality and character of items on the altar, including the preparation of communion and care for paraments of the altar
  • Particularly need individuals to prepare/set-up communion trays, etc. for the 8:30 a.m. worship service.
  • Individuals are needed to be team leaders for communion preparation etc. (3-6 times per year) at 8:30 a.m. worship services.
  • Individuals willing to set up for 5th Sunday communion and special communions.
  • Individuals to place communion cards, visitor cards and prayer request cards in the pew racks.
  • Individuals to help with laundry of communion cloths.
Communion Ministers Assist with serving communion. New members are always welcome to train as substitutes and assist with communion.
Fine Art Ministry Sponsors exhibits, maintains and selects additions to the permanent art collection at Central. Members come from a variety of occupations. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month (except July and August), at 5:30 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge. New members are always welcome.
Floral Guild Coordinates Sunday floral tributes, as well as Easter lily and Christmas poinsettia gifts. Meets monthly for Bible study at a members home. Women who would enjoy the sociality of a group that meets for Bible study and would like to perform a service for CLC. No special talent needed.
Funeral Ministry Prepares and serves receptions after a funeral. Volunteers who are available on a 2-day notice to join us on the day of the reception. We offer on the job training. We do not have structured meetings or officers.
Ushers' Society Offers hospitality, collects offerings and assists with special church service activities. Ushers serve at both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services for 1 month every 3 months. Ushers are assigned to a regular ushering team. Ushers fill in for one another when needed (sickness, travel etc.).
