Lectures & Workshops

July 13, 2008 10:45 am to 11:45 am

"Places of Encounter: The meaning of worship space". Gather in the sanctuary with our own Pastor Foy Christopherson, to learn more about how the dynamics of Central’s worship space and others help worship to communicate the full meaning of assembly, baptism, proclamation, and meal. His training in worship and the arts, theology and theater, music and design brings clarity and insight to understanding how worship spaces serve, as captured in his book, A Place of Encounter: Renewing Worship Spaces. As one book reviewer said, “If you are like most people, you are convinced the worship space of heaven itself was patterned after the perfectly beautiful church in which you were raised….Our worship spaces are sacred spaces, not because they are perfectly beautiful, but because they are places in which we encounter the holy.” Come and hear Pastor C discuss the places we have created in which the assembly gathers to worship God. (This event is rescheduled from June 15.) The nursery will be available until noon for small children.

Central "Arts Crawl" with Jerry Evenrud. The Arts Crawl will feature some of Central's own stained glass, sculpture, paintings, prints, needlework and other items of interest. We will look closely at works so familiar that we no longer see them, as well as some hidden treasures. Our "docent" will be Jerry Evenrud. We know him as a gifted member of Central. He has also been a gift to the church as a whole as a musician and as an art collector. His collection of art relating to the prodigal son is the basis for And Grace Will Lead Me Home, a beautiful book about the collection with reflections by Robert Brusic. Jerry often has displayed the collection and toured with it (including a show at the Museum of Biblical Art in New York), and recently has donated it to Luther Seminary. The nursery will be available until noon for small children.
